Subscription Concert 2007.

Once again the Band ended their annual 4-day workshop with a very successful concert at the Grand Island played to a packed audienc of enthusiastic, appreciative supporters.

Our invited tutor, making a welcome return visit, was the multi-talented composer, arrange, adjudicator, performer Alan Fernie who again encouraged and pushed the Junior and Senior bands to higher levels of performance over a hectic 4 days.

The concert began with a short performance by the thriving Junior band, over 40 players from about the age of 8 to around 14 who most ably put into practice what they have learned at the hands of two stalwart conductor, Ray and John, who give countless hours to the youngsters annually. Included was an excellent solo of "Wichita Lineman " by Daisy Revell , and Charlotte Underwood received the Jack and Joan Award for progress in the Junior Band playing trombone .

They were followed by the Senior Band, conducted by Alan Fernie and our musical director Rob, who performed a well received variety of pieces, some well known and one barely finished that weekend! The highlight for many, though, was the much anticipated playing of our guest soloist, Sam Kinrade, returning to his roots.

Starting in the Junior band at 8, progressing to Principal Cornet of the Senior Band, then winning a place at Chetham's where he also became Head Boy, he is now studying Trumpet at the Guildhall. Although still only 18 he confidently showed his great ability with superb performances of Napoli, Sugar Blues, Share my Yoke and Children of Sanchez.

What an enjoyable evening, and yet more evidence of the strength of banding in the North of the island. Very many thanks, not only to the players but also to the many volunteers and helpers who work behind the scene to make such a night possible,Giussi especially.
